Corrections to OITHv4

Glad you made it here!

Thanks to Jim Kaminski and dogged perseverence, a number of mistakes have been found that will be included in the next version. This page is for you to transcribe into your current copy. Some fixes are relatively minor but others could cause frustration if, for example, an object is not where the books says it's supposed to be.

If you find a detail in need of repair, please let me know. Thanks!

In the next version – and you're the first to know – every RA/Dec address will be updated to 12.2010 locations. Voyager 4.5.4, a wonderful program, is being used for these new addresses. Again, most of these changes are relatively minor, but in the name of completeness... The new version will likely be ready by December, 2010.

So without further ado, here are the (partial) updates to OITHv4... more to come:

Page 20
- n1023 should be labeled as LG

Page 21
- n2903 and 2905 are the same object; delete 2905 (see LEO)
- n4125 should be labeled as EG
- n4594 is out of numerical order

Page 23
- IC1795 should be deleted; same object as n896
- PK215+11.1 should be deleted as it's mag 15.4

Page 24
- You can add Gamma AND to the list of Albireo-type doubles

Page 25
- The Sculptor Galaxy will be changed to the Silver Dollar Galaxy

Page 26
- Jupiter's moons now number 63; and you may as well remove the asterisk because there's no reference to it

Page 27
- The parent comet for the Leonids is 55P/Tempel-Tuttle

Page 28
- M44 in CNC is currently labeled M41 (how'd that happen?)
- CVN is not labeled - it's south of (below) the handle in UMA

Page 33
- Remove IC1369 CYG from the mag 7 list, it's too dim for this list

Page 34
- Remove PK215 from the map (see Page 23 note)

Page 35
- Remove PK215 from the list

Page 38
- There should be a space in the RA/Dec address, after the #9

Page 40
- AQR: M2 size should be 21"
- AQL: Struve404 mag should be 6.8/8.1
- AQL: n6760 size should be 13"

Page 41
- AQL: Cr401 is incorrectly labeled Cr410 (dislexia again)

Page 44
- CAM: n1502 size should be 8' instead of 8º
- CAM: Remove IC356; too dim for the book @ mag 11.5
- CNC: Remove "Triple" from Iota CNC; it's only a double

Page 48
- CMA: Sirius has a separation of 3.7" (if you can split 'em)
- CMA: n2359 needs an OIII filter for best contrast
- CMI: Remove PK215+11.1 as it's too dim at mag 15.4

Page 49
- CMI: Remove PK215 from the map (unless you've got a huge mirror!)

Page 50
- CAP: Al Giedi double separation is 45"

Page 52
- CAS: Star13 is supposed to be a binocular object but I have yet to see it
- CAS: IC1795 should be designated ngc896

Page 53
- In the photo inset, n1027 is the cluster just to the left of IC1805
- Below the inset, the letters CEP are just peeking out

Page 55
- CEP: 7762 position not quite correct; should be about 3/8" up and left of its present position
- CEP: Mrk50 should be designated as 7635CAS

Page 56
- CET: Kaffaljidhma (in the book, the 'm' is 'in')
- CET: IC1613 Dec should be + (not -)

Page 60
- CRV: ngc4361 type should be PN (not GC)

Page 63
Biur2 is mislabeled as Buir2
The "Fairy Ring" should be labeled as Basel6

Page 64
- CYG: (add) Basel6 OC 7' 20:07.2 38º23' 7.69
- DEL: alpha should be spelled: Sualocin
- DEL: ngc6891 Dec should be 12º44'

Page 65
- DEL map reference (on right side) as S&T PSA chart 64

Page 66
- DRA: ngc4125 type should be EG

Page 67
- DEL: same change as Page 65

Page 68
- ERI: ngc1332 type should be EG
- ERI: (add) ngc1398 SG 7x5 03:39.2 -26º18' 9.7 Bright core; elongated halo
- ERI: (add) ngc1360 PN 7x5 03:33.7 -25º50' 9.6 Use OIII; bright center star; well defined
- FOR: both ngc1399 and 1404 should be EG

Page 70
- GEM: 38GEM separation is 7", not 7'
- GEM: ngc 2355 and 2356 are the same object; contains 40 stars; faint
- GEM: Boc1, add "difficult" to the description
- GEM: (add) Abell 21 PN 12.4x8.5 07:29.7 13º13' 10.2 Irregular half-moon shape; use OIII @ low power

Page 72
- HYA: ngc3109 should be classed IG, type SBm
- HYA: ngc3923 should be classed EG

Page 73
- HER: I was never really happy with the constellation outline so in the next version, Hercules will be redrawn.
- HYA: ngc 3109 should be about 1/4" higher and 1/8" to the left (NE)

Page 74
- LAC: * 8 is a 7-star system; delete "Quadruple"
- LAC: ngc 7243: insert "use low power" (it's true there are some variable stars, but that doesn't help finding the object)
- LAC: ngc7296 should be indicated as ngc7295/6 as it's one of many objects with 2 ngc numbers.
- LAC: IC1442: delete 7243 from the line (what was I thinking?)
- LEO: ngc 2903 and 2905 are the same object, should be just 2903
- LEO: ngc 3607: copy should read, "near 3905+08"
- LEO: ngc 3640 should be classed EG

Page 76
- LEP: alpha * is a binocular double, probably adding just the words is OK

Page 78

- LYR: the name of beta is Sheliak
- LYR: delta is part of Steph1

- Bellatrix is misspelled with one L
- LAC should be labeled ERI (oops)

Page 88
- PER: ngc1023 designation should be LG (lenticular)
- PER: Tr2 should read "compare" to M11

- SGR: M54 distance should be 82KLY

Page 95
- SGE: Theta not mapped correctly; should be just left of X

Page 96
- SGR: ngc6717 should be designated GC

Still a bit more to proofread and more to come... little at a time.
